Summary

The Tertiary Planning Unit (TPU) boundaries provide a common geographic system for the compilation of statistical data. Statistical data from the population census/by-census are produced using this basic system. Data requirements of different users can be met by converting data recorded on the basis of TPU into the users' geographic system for their planning and operational purpose.

Description

The TPU is a geographic reference system demarcated by the Planning Department for the territory of Hong Kong. The whole territory of Hong Kong is divided into a number of TPUs.Each of the TPU is identified by a unique three-digit number. In general, the TPU boundaries are delineated when the boundaries can be easily referenced by an adjoining feature which could be the boundary of a major development site, road centreline, coastal lines, natural ridges, village clusters, zoning boundaries in the Outline Zoning Plans and boundaries of District Councils. At about every five-year interval, the TPU boundaries will be updated. Statistical data such as projected population is the key information usually affiliated to the TPU and is always requested by the Government departments for their business planning purposes.
